There is no doubt that Freedom of speech is a concept intrinsic to the maintenance of democracy. With the advent of a diversity of midiatic tools, the scrutiny of what is protected by this amendment has been vastly debated by organizations all around the world, specially by journalistic assemblies.

Thus, it is compulsory to look up on this principle and its origin, reaffirming how it constitutes the defense of the right to express opinions without anyone's restraint.

Firstly, it is important to state that being able to express your opinions independently is being able to agree and disagree with the ideas, hence, constituting an act of resistance that not only encourages people to speak out, but also makes it easier to tackle systemic issues. Therefore, as democracy is mainly stiffen by the belief in freedom and equality between citizens, alongside by being the "power of the people", expressing opinions without discretion and respecting Human Rights is essential.

We cannot ignore the fact that the press is constantly threatened and that journalists and photographers may face a lot of dangers while working.

An example of this was on ONU Vital's debate, in which Venezuela, allegedly without knowledge about its president's name, argued with the press, claiming that this allegation was falsely spread on.

That said, it is key to protect the independence of speech amidst journalism and also recognise that a free and independent press is the core institution connecting people to the information they need to advocate for themselves, make informed decisions, and hold governmental officials accountable.
