World Trade Organization (WTO): disagreements in agreements

For about one hour, representatives tried to protect their main concerns. However, many of them did not achieve the goal.

India claimed to settle a trade agreement with Iraq, which involved exporting oil for India, in order to refine the commodity in that country. In this aspect, Iraq did not mention or suggest any intention in relation to oil negotiations. In addition to such incompatibility, Venezuela proposed to establish a comercial treaty with Iraq, because of its intend to stimulate the economy by reducing customs duty in oil exportation. Never the less, Venezuela recognized that selling oil to Iraq is impractical, due to the dependency of both countries in that commodity.
The comparison between information shared by the media on which committee indicates controversy and lack of study. For example, Indonesia pointed out different proposes in Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and WTO. In the first one, delegates afirmed that they needed investiments in the primary sector, as well as in insfrastructure. In the second committee, it was claimed that investments should go to research.
After lunch break, representatives and press discussed UN’s position about technology investments. Some of the topics are the following.
On the one hand, UK denied that it will impose agricultural methods involving GM products. On the other hand, USA agreed with the use of GM products to increase agricultural production in Ethiopia and Indonesia.
One of the agreements done was between France and Haiti, which decided to work together. France will apply an amount of money for Haiti to develop mineral exploitation and technology. Consequently, food insecurety might decrease. Also, Haitian historical debt with France will be settled and 30% of all profits that Haiti has will be addressed to France.
Finally, China and Venezuela set an agreement involving oil import with lower customs duty. In return, Venezuela will receive several food commodities, such as grains and soya. However, Germany oposed to this agreement, because it refuses taking economy part in a country, which is politically disrupted.
